How do we abstract when a patient has more than one cytoreductive surgery with different dates, approaches, and procedure types?

Ex: Patient originally had supracervical hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy. Two months later the patient had open approach with removal of cervix and bilateral oophorectomy.

Hi Vanessa, thanks for this great question! This sounds like a complex situation so to be sure we answering correctly, we have shared your question with one of our directors of gyn onc initiatives, Dr Shitanshu Uppal. Once we hear back, we'll be sure to provide an update. Thanks for your patience on this!

Hi again Vanessa! Thanks for your patience while we worked to determine the answer to this question. We understand that cases involving more than one surgery can be confusing, as they are complex and often involve many variables.

We discussed this scenario as a group with Dr. Uppal and based on the information provided, and without knowing all the specific details of this case, our recommendation would be to abstract the first surgery only, provided it was performed by the gynecologic oncologist. If the first surgery was not performed by the gynecologic oncologist but the second surgery was, then this is the one that should be abstracted.

Please let us know if you need further clarification. We can do a deeper dive into this with some additional details if needed. We appreciate your question and encourage abstractors to reach out with complex cases like this.
