This section explores the concept of “Vulnerability Armory,” which are the defenses we build to protect ourselves from vulnerability. Brown argues that while these armors might seem protective, they stand in the way of genuine connection, growth, and authentic living.

Some discussion questions to consider, broken into page sections:

Discussion question: How do you “lean into” joy and embrace experiences in the moment rather than waiting for “the other shoe to drop?”

Page 128-137: The Shield: Perfectionism

Discussion question: How does perfectionism, as described by Brene Brown, function as a form of armor against vulnerability, and what are the potential consequences of using this shield? (note: perfectionism is not the same thing as excellence)

Discussion question: In what ways do we use being busy or being constantly available as armor to avoid vulnerability at work?
