In the second half of Chapter 4, Brené Brown takes us deeper into what it means to practice vulnerability in ways that truly foster connection, rather than erode it. She introduces the concept of floodlighting—the tendency to overshare in ways that can feel intrusive or self-serving—and contrasts it with intentional, grounded vulnerability. Through insights on being present, paying attention, and moving forward, this section encourages us to slow down, reflect, and respond rather than react. It’s an invitation to show up more mindfully in our relationships—with courage, boundaries, and compassion.

Pg 151-155: The Shield: Viking or Victim

  • Have you experienced the Viking or Victim paradigm in your life? How does this mentality impact leadership, team dynamics, or personal relationships?

 Pg 159-160: The Shield: Floodlighting

  • What are the warning signs that vulnerability might be turning into floodlighting? How can we recognize when we’re oversharing instead of meaningfully connecting?

Pg 166-168: Daring Greatly: Being present, paying attention and moving forward.

  • What does Brené Brown mean by “being present” in moments of vulnerability? How does being fully present help us build shame resilience and deeper connections?
